Peterson Bay on the E coast of Espiritu Santo is one of the most sheltered stretches of water in Vanuatu, and Oyster Island sits in the middle of it, twenty minutes from Santo’s international airport.

Thirty hectares of low, wooded island come with mains power and water piped across from the mainland, an unusual advantage in a country where most islands run on generators and rainwater catchment. Vanuatu’s underwater post office is on Hideaway Island. Divers swim down to a booth three metres below the surface to post waterproof postcards franked with a special stamp, and it has made this small island one of the best-known addresses in the country.

The island lies in Mele Bay off W Efate, three minutes by ferry from the mainland and about ten minutes from Port Vila’s airport, closer to an international runway than almost any island resort in the Pacific. The ferry runs 24 hours.

Under two hectares of land carry an operating resort, a marine sanctuary and a house reef snorkelled directly off the beach.

At 264 hectares, Dolphin Island is among the largest private islands available anywhere in the South Pacific, and one of very few offered whole rather than in lots. It lies off the NE coast of Espiritu Santo, a short crossing from the village of Port Olry.

The island rises to 213 metres, high enough for long views back across the channel, and carries two freshwater lakes, a rarity on a Pacific island of any size. Hundreds of metres of white sand ring the shoreline, with kilometres of untouched coast beyond and a fringing reef offshore.

Nothing has been built. An old cattle ranch stands abandoned in the interior, a trace of Santo’s plantation era, and the land has been left to regrow since.

Espiritu Santo is Vanuatu’s tourism draw. Champagne Beach, the blue holes and the SS President Coolidge wreck are all within reach, and Luganville, the country’s second city, is about an hour away by road.

Champagne Beach is the most photographed stretch of sand in Vanuatu. Elephant Island lies 4km N of it, in Turtle Bay on the NE coast of Espiritu Santo.

At 160 hectares, this is a large island by any measure, with room for a resort of real scale or for a single estate with more land than most owners will ever walk. It is undeveloped, reached by a 45-minute drive from Santo’s international airport and a ten-minute crossing.

The island is known locally as Lethu, and appears under that name and as Lathu in older records.

For a developer, the position is the argument: an established tourism corridor, already served by the Hog Harbour road and the cruise anchorage at Champagne Beach, on an island big enough to build something that does not feel like everyone else’s.

Kakula sits in Undine Bay off NE Efate, between the Efate shore and Pele Island, and under an hour from Port Vila’s international airport. It is close enough for a weekend, yet far enough to feel remote.

Thirty-five hectares come with tourism zoning already in place. The island is not empty. A small guesthouse operates here with rooms, a dining area and a waterfront faré, while day trips run from the mainland for lunch and snorkelling. A handful of buildings and paths are established.

The offering also takes in a separate mainland waterfront site at Emua with deep-water access and road frontage, useful for anyone wanting a landing point and staff base on Efate rather than running everything by boat.

North Efate is the most accessible island market in Vanuatu, with a sealed road the whole way from Port Vila and an established cluster of resorts along the Undine Bay shore.

The Banks Islands form the far north of Vanuatu, nearer the Solomon Islands than Port Vila and among the least visited islands in the Pacific. Pakea lies among them, across the Dudley Channel from Vanua Lava.

One hundred and fifteen hectares are operated as a private retreat. Sola, the provincial centre and airfield, is 20 minutes away by boat, while Luganville on Espiritu Santo is a 40-minute flight away.

The island has been held by the same family for years. They renewed the lease with the traditional custodian owners from Mota in 2008, a continuity that counts for something in a country where custom ownership sits beneath every lease.

Acquisition is by transfer of the company that holds the island, which the selling agent presents as a faster and cheaper route than assigning the lease itself.
